Two years ago last Saturday, George Floyd died in the custody of MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS.
At that time, people in Minneapolis lost they damn minds, and a crowd formed outside the police station. The cops ABANDONED their building, which was immediately and pointlessly overrun by garbage on legs.
It spread to other cities, then other countries, and... you know, you KNOW THE THING!
Jump to June. The rioting, marching, drumming, chanting, yelling WAS STILL going very strong, and it wouldn't reallly taper off fully until, like, August.
Politicians not only didn't shut down these super-spreader events - like they'd done in Michegan - but actually PRAISED the protesters and assigned great integrity and importance to what they were doing.
They were telling everybody else not to have cookouts and shit for the 4th.
Mayor De Blasio explained it to Wolf Blitzer like this:
- "LOOK WOLF, THIS IS ALWAYS AN AREA OF REAL SENSITIVITY.
IF YOU'RE JUST TALKIN ABOUT HEALTH, WE WOULD ALWAYS SAY, 'HEY FOLKS, STAY HOME IF YOU CAN.'
"BUT WE UNDERSTAND THIS MOMENT IN HISTORY. PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE NEED FOR HISTORIC CHANGES. I MEAN TODAY, IN NEW YORK CITY, YOU KNOW... RECOGNIZING THE POWER AND THE MEANING OF THE MESSAGE, 'BLACK LIVES MATTER,' WHICH WE DID IN FRONT OF TRUMP TOWER TODAY, THIS IS A HISTORIC MOMENT OF CHANGE. WE HAVE TO RESPECT THAT, BUT ALSO SAY TO PEOPLE THAT THE KINDS OF GATHERINGS WE'RE USED TO, THE PARADES, THE FAIRS. WE JUST CAN'T HAVE THAT WHILE WE'RE FOCUSSING ON HEALTH RIGHT NOW."
It was that easy.
Covid, they'd told us, was a serious AF, life-threatening virus and we all had to make sacrifices and so forth. Missed work, closed businesses, strained relationships at home, just part of life right now.
Increased depression, alcoholism and drug abuse and a sharp increase in suicides, sorry we've got to save lives.
You can't go to church or the gym (but the liquor store is OPEN).
But wait, George Floyd is dead? and his death is all about racism? Well, this is important, obviously much more so than flattening the curve and stopping the virus that's had you wearing a mask all the time, social distancing and closing your businesses.
Over 1,000 "health professionals" signed a letter that essentially raised its middle finger to common sense and reason, to decent people, to all of us.

We weren't officially on full lockdown at that point, but they kept telling us to stay home anyway. Parties, parades, cookouts, celebrations, funerals, weddings, mini golf, sports events, concerts - none of that shit was allowed, and anything that was allowed was modified out of recognition.

On April 30, heavily armed and predominantly white protesters entered the State Capitol building in Lansing, Michigan, protesting stay-home orders and calls for widespread public masking to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Infectious disease physicians and public health officials publicly condemned these actions and privately mourned the widening rift between leaders in science and a subset of the communities that they serve. As of May 30, we are witnessing continuing demonstrations in response to ongoing, pervasive, and lethal institutional racism set off by the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, among many other Black lives taken by police. A public health response to these demonstrations is also warranted, but this message must be wholly different from the response to white protesters resisting stay-home orders. Infectious disease and public health narratives adjacent to demonstrations against racism must be consciously anti-racist, and infectious disease experts must be clear and consistent in prioritizing an anti-racist message.
“Prepare for an increased number of infections in the days following a protest,” the letter says. “Provide increased access to testing and care for people in the affected communities, especially when they or their family members put themselves at risk by attending protests.”
The whole letter is worth reading again because maybe, like me, you've sort of forgotten what an outraging thing this was.
The thrust of this article is that the immense financial damage, as well as the number of people killed during the riots and the number of officers injured - which had been more-or-less accurate in the fact-checked post - were not necessarily caused by BLM. There were a ton of people there, so it's FALSE to say BLM caused ANYTHING!
